Sports Writing

As Sports Information Correspondent for Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, I had the opportunity to learn more about sports writing in areas including game summaries and feature stories. Here you'll find a variety of writing styles about different sporting matches as well as feature stories about events and specialty games.

Women's Soccer, Game Summary

Click to view one of my published game summaries from a women's soccer game win, where I described the game and highlights from the Saint Mary's team.

Men's Soccer, Game Summary

Here is a sample of writing about a disappointing loss. When the games weren’t in favor of Saint Mary’s, I learned how to find the highlights and write a compelling recap nevertheless.

Men's Hockey, Game Summary

This was a thrilling win to cover, as the two game-winning goals came in the final two minutes of the matchup. I challenged myself to convey the exciting emotions of the game into my story.

Women's Basketball, Game Summary

Writing about basketball is very different from other sports because scoring occurs much more frequently. I learned how to describe scoring streaks and the most important game moments.

Women's Soccer, Playoff Preview

When the Saint Mary's women's soccer team qualified for the MIAC Playoffs, I  wrote a feature story about the team's success and growth with each other in the sport.

Women's Hockey, Game Summary

I usually attend every game that I cover, but this story was challenging as I didn’t attend the away game. I relied strictly on the game stats for information, which made adding details more difficult.

Men's Hockey, Retreat Review

This is a feature story I wrote about a retreat hosted by the Saint Mary’s men’s hockey team. I spoke with players to provide emotion to the story, while highlighting the main events.

Men's Basketball, Playoff Preview

I was able to write a playoff preview article for the Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team, where I highlighted their development throughout the season and emphasized their goals.
